Fake It ‘Til You Make It?
You’ve heard the expression before: “Fake it ’til you make it.”
In other words: just act like you know what you’re doing, and eventually (one day, some day), you will.
While I understand the sentiment behind the expression, I think it’s the absolute worst!
Why? Because it simply isn’t true.
The word “fake” means: “not genuine, or counterfeit.”
I’m guessing that you are the complete opposite.
Your passion for design – and for having the creative freedom that comes with owning your own business – is genuine, indeed.
Even if you’re just starting out on your own as a designer, you’re not a knock-off version of yourself.
Your dreams are real… and so are you!
So how do you make the leap from working for another designer – or from working with “less-than-ideal” clients – to a healthy, fulfilling interior design practice that makes you practically leap out of bed each morning, excited to connect with your clients and get to work?
It’s a simple three-step process:
1. Start with a Plan
Just as you start a new design project with programming, you need to follow a proven plan for growing your business.
Follow a specific, step-by-step roadmap to get you from where you are now to where you want to be in the near future.
Think about it this way: what if you drove to the airport, got in line at the ticket counter, and when it was your turn, told the ticket agent you didn’t know where you were going?
It wouldn’t work, right? The ticket agent needs to know: are you going to Cincinnati… or Cannes?
You need to know exactly where you want to end up – otherwise, you ain’t going nowhere.
2. Stick to It
Starting, then stopping… then deciding on a new plan because you just heard of a “new way” to achieve your goals quicker, will only diminish your momentum and enthusiasm… and ultimately, your results.
Say you’re driving to Chicago on the interstate, but along the way, you meet a lovely young couple at a rest stop who describe the most beautiful scenic route you could take, instead.
You decide to follow their advice… only to get hopelessly lost in rural Pennsylvania!
Don’t get distracted by shiny objects and allow yourself to wander off the proven path. A successful business requires dedication, discipline, and focus.
3. Learn It ‘Til You Earn It
When you first started out as an interior designer, you didn’t know everything about design, but you stayed dedicated to your craft and kept moving forward. You mastered one aspect, and then another.
The same goes for reaching your goals in business.
Take regular, consistent action every day towards your goal of having a solid base of ideal clients, referral partners, and reliable income for the long term. Not just for a few weeks, months, or even a year… but forever.
Make the decision and commit to it, and the design practice of your dreams will be yours!
